Set of two stoneware figures from the series Big Stone, Little Stones
Kanzan and Jittoku were often depicted as tramps and had the comportment of pranksters. Kanzan, a poet, was often seen laughing loudly and often carried a blank scroll in his hands. Jittoku, an orphan, was often found helping in the kitchen of the monastery. Kanzan with scrolls in hand is often thought of as the symbol of theory, while Jittoku with broom in hand represents the symbol of practice. Hence, the eternal question - the theoretical vs. the practical.
